A septic system has three main components working together: the septic tank, the distribution box, and the leaching bed. Wastewater from the property flows into the septic tank, where solids settle to the bottom and lighter material rises to the top. The clarified liquid in the middle, called effluent, then moves forward for further treatment.

A distribution box receives that effluent and directs it evenly across multiple leaching bed trenches, also called a drainage field, where the soil filters and absorbs it. The leaching bed is the most space-intensive part of the system, and its size depends on two things: how much wastewater the property generates and how well the soil can accept it.

Two factors shape every leaching bed design:

Septic tank sizing: Tank capacity is based on the number of bedrooms or the expected daily wastewater flow, so the tank can handle peak loads without pushing solids into the leaching bed.
Soil composition and percolation rate: A percolation test measures how quickly water moves through the soil. Slow-draining soil requires a larger leaching bed area; well-draining soil allows for a more compact design.
