Does Toronto Have Hard Water?

The water in Toronto is obtained from Lake Ontario and undergoes a process of treatment before being distributed. The water in Lake Ontario is not highly mineralized, but it does have a considerable mineral content, resulting in fairly hard water in Toronto. The hardness level at hand often does not pose significant problems for domestic use, although it may lead to small inconveniences like scaling in household appliances and diminished efficacy of soaps and detergents.

It is advisable to refer to the most recent water quality report issued by the city of Toronto for comprehensive information.

Stop Hard Water

Water that is high in minerals such as calcium and magnesium is known as hard water. If you still feel residue on your hands after washing them or you take dishes out of the dishwasher and notice spots on your glasses, it can be a sign that you have hard water. Water with a high concentration of minerals can be damaging to your plumbing and appliances so it can be a good idea to have a water softener installed. The mineral content builds up and forms scales inside pipes, dishwashers, coffee pots and water heaters which can result in damage and higher electricity bills. Mineral residue can also stain sinks, bathtubs and build up on your faucets and shower-heads. It can be annoying and sometimes difficult to remove. Hard water also interferes with soaps and detergents which can make it harder to remove oils and dirt.

How Do Water Softeners Work

Water softeners work by removing the calcium and magnesium ions from the water and replacing them with sodium. The water softener tank contains porous resin that is negatively charged. Positively charged sodium ions bond to the negatively charged resin and, as the water passes through, the positive calcium and magnesium ions will stick to the resin, releasing some of the sodium ions.

There are many benefits to having soft water in your home. You can say goodbye to mineral stains on your fixtures, tubs, and sinks. Washing clothing and dishes is easier and requires less soap and detergent. No more unsightly spotting on glasses and cutlery. Plus, it is much better for your pipes and appliances. You can extend the lifetime on many water-using appliances by eliminating the mineral buildup, and when you choose us, you get the added peace of mind that comes from working with a trusted, award-winning Rooter-Man team that is available day and night to support your plumbing and water treatment needs.
